New Delhi: In an essential jolt to the BJP in advance of the election for the next assembly in January, Uttarakhand Transport Minister Yashpal Arya resigned from the saffron party Monday morning and joined Congress together with his son, MLA Sanjeev. Yashpal Arya, along with his son and their supporters, has joined the Congress at the invitation of the party’s top members Harish Rawat, KC Venugopal and Randeep Surjewala in New Delhi.
The day before, they had dinner with their former Congress President Rahul Gandhi in his home. Yashpal Arya served as president of the Uttarakhand Congress from 2007 to 2014 and was an earlier speaker and minister within the Congress government headed by Rawat.
He had switched to his party BJP in 2017 in advance of the elections to the assembly in Uttarakhand. He is the representative of the Mukteshwar Assembly constituency within the state. His son Sanjeev is the representative of that constituency. Nainital Assembly constituency in Uttarakhand.
